Biathlon Alberta selected 2023 Canada Winter Games team!

Biathlon Alberta is proud to announce the names of the athletes that will represent Alberta during the 2023 Canada Winter Games in PEI between February 17- 26, 2023!

The team that will be led by coaches Ntala Quintilio (Crazy Mare Ranch) and Stuart Harden (Canmore Nordic Ski Club) will leave to PEI on February 17th in one of two chartered flights that will leave from Calgary. The athletes will meet prior to their departure on February 14, 2023, for a short 3 day camp in Canmore.

The athletes that will represent Alberta are:

Julia Bartlett (Calgary Biathlon Racers)

Lucia Baergen (Canmore Nordic)

Aimee-Rae Morin (Battle River Nordic)

Wallis Siemens (Foothills Nordic)

Theo Fradette (Canmore Nordic)

Liam Tinworth (Wapiti Nordic)

Kase Repp (Foothills Nordic)

Peter Rojkovski (Foothills Nordic)

The team will be supported by Wax Technician Lowell Niven (Battle River Nordic).

We wish the entire team a fantastic time in PEI and are excited to follow the races!

Sunday of Calforex Cup #2 will be cancelled!

Still many volunteers needed for Saturday’s race!

The Organizing Committee of Calforex Cup #2 regrets to inform the participants that Sunday’s Calforex Cup event will be cancelled due forecasted temperatures.

Athletes will receive a full refund for Sunday.

Athletes that are currently only registered for the Sunday race will be contacted and will have the opportunity to register for the Saturday race.

At this point there is only a very low number of volunteers registered for the event!

And the 2022 Jupi Award winners are….

Richard Boruta’s sudden passing in August 2017 shocked the biathlon community. He was a family man, respected world-class coach and builder of biathlon throughout Canada. His work-ethic and incredible passion for life was infectious to all those with who he came into contact. The “Jupi Award,” which is roughly translated as “awesome” in Czech, is intended to recognize a young athlete who personifies these same traits in their pursuit of excellence in biathlon.

A group of Richard Boruta’s athletes came together to create an annual award that will benefit two developing Biathlon Alberta athlete and pay tribute to the late coach’s memory. The award that will be presented to one female and one male athlete at this weekend’s Calforex Cup #2.

We received over 30 applications in total and Biathlon Alberta congratulates Antija Quintilio and Levi Barrenechea to being selected as the 2022 Jupi Award winner! Congratulations!

New Alberta team, Nationals subsidy criteria and some small updates on the Hosting Policy!

The Biathlon Alberta Board of Directors approved during yesterday’s meeting the criteria for the financial subsidy for the 2023 National Championships. The 2023 National Championships will be held in Valcartier, Quebec, and participating athletes from Alberta have the chance to qualify for this financial subsidy.

Biathlon Alberta is also very happy to introduce for the 2023-24 season a new provincial team. The Team Alberta Shooting Stars will be open to qualified athletes in the Senior Girls/Boys & Youth Girls/Boys categories.

The criteria on how to qualify for this new team can be found HERE.

Finally, the Board of Directors also approved an updated version of the 2022-23 Hosting Policy. We were made aware of some typos and other small mistakes after the initial release in October. These have been fixed. Annex I, which was previously a separate document has also be attached to the Hosting Policy document. The updated Hosting Policy can be found HERE.

The Foothills Nordic Ski Club, Calgary Biathlon Racers, Canmore Nordic Ski Club, Rocky Mountain Racers and Biathlon Alberta invite you to the second Calforex Cup of the 2022-23 season in Canmore.

The invitation is now published on our event page. The zone4 registration is scheduled to open tonight, November 10, 2022, at 08:00pm

2022 Jupi Award application is now open!

 A group of Richard Boruta’s athletes have come together to create an annual award valued at a minimum of $2,000 that will benefit two developing Biathlon Alberta athlete and pay tribute to the late coach’s memory ($1000 female / $1000 male).

His work-ethic and incredible passion for life was infectious to all those with who he came into contact. Application Details and Criteria:

  • Biathlon Alberta members, ages 14 to 19 years-of-age as of January 1st, 2023
  • Submit a maximum of 500 words on your future plans in Biathlon (in word or pdf document)
  • Send applications to Elmar Heger, at elmar@biathlon.ca and include “Jupi Award” and your name in the subject line
  • Deadline to submit your applications is Friday, November 18th, 2022.
