Biathlon Alberta welcomes a number of new Directors to their Board after the 2023 Annual General Meeting.

Up for election were the roles of:

Vice-President Technical

Director of Coaching Development

Director of PR & Marketing


Director at Large

We saw 4 Directors not returning to their roles while VP-Technical, Jason Nishiyama, will fill this role also for the next 2-year term.

Newly elected were Stuart Harden (Director of Coaching Development), Bart Hulshoff (Director of PR & Marketing), Philip Mincher (Treasurer), and Macx Davies (Director at Large).

Biathlon Alberta would like to thank the departing Directors for their years of work and dedication to our organization! Jason Acker (Director at Large), Holly Bird (Director of PR & Marketing), Rachel Koroscil (Director of Coaching Development, left in early 2023 after accepting the BATC Head Coach role), and especially Sherry Thompson (Treasurer) who left the Board of Directors after over 20 years of service to the membership! THANK YOU!

We are looking forward to working with the newly created Board of Directors and thank everyone for their volunteer efforts!

Biathlon Alberta offers development opportunities for coaches and officials in October

Biathlon Alberta invites all interested members to register for the upcoming coaching and officials courses.

We have scheduled a virtual official course on October 14-15, 2023. This course will be held via Zoom. You can find more information about this course HERE.

We are also offering an NCCP Trainer (silver) coaching course on October 28-29, 2023. This will be an in-person course in Canmore. You can find more information about this course HERE.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to these two development opportunities before the new racing season starts!

Biathlon Alberta is seeking nominations for the 2022-23 Biathlon Alberta Awards!

We want to celebrate our athletes, volunteers, coaches, and officials and are seeking nominations for the 2022-23 Biathlon Alberta Awards.

Biathlon Alberta is asking their members to nominate other Biathlon Alberta members for the following awards:

Ruedi Setz Memorial Award

The award will honor a biathlete who has performed well in the sport, displayed exemplary standards of sportsmanship, and made a significant contribution to assisting the development of the sport. The recipient will not necessarily have exhibited the highest performance level during the competition year.

Shell Volunteer of the Year Award

The Shell Volunteer of the Year Award is awarded annually to a Biathlon Alberta member who has made significant contributions to the sport of biathlon and truly exemplifies the volunteer spirit.

Richard BorutaMemorial- Coach of the Year Award

The Richard Boruta Memorial  – Coach of the Year Award is presented annually to the Biathlon Alberta Coach who demonstrates respect for officials, opponents, and parents while espousing a philosophy of fair play. This coach demonstrates concern for the all-around development of the athlete and instills guidelines reflecting responsible conduct beyond the playing field. Furthermore, this coach presents by example a positive image of coaching, applies relevant training theory and coaching techniques, and demonstrates the ability to improve the athletic performance of a team or individual.

Alberta Biathlon Club Official of the Year Award

The ABC Official of the Year Award is presented annually to a Biathlon Alberta member who has significantly contributed to the officiating of Biathlon Alberta competitions. This individual respects the rules and regulations of Biathlon while demonstrating a philosophy of fair play.

Biathlon Canada invites all eligible coaches to participate in online NCCP Competition- Introduction workshops!

Biathlon Canada is offering 3 opportunities to complete Part 1 of the biathlon NCCP Competition-Introduction coach workshop online this summer.

Three courses are being offered:

  • Option #1: July 24,31 and August 14, 12 at 18:00-21:00 Pacific Time
  • Option #2: September 17,24 and October 1,8 at 15:00-18:00 Pacific Time
  • Option #3: September 18,25 and October 2,9 at 18:00-21:00 Pacific Time

The course fee is $100. Registration for the courses is available here:

The following modules will be completed in Part 1:

  • Setting the Scene
  • Creating the Training Environment
  • Designing a Seasonal Plan
  • Supporting the Competitive Experience

If you have previously taken either of the “dryland” or “on-snow” Competition-Introduction workshops and need to complete any of the above modules for your training, please contact to inquire if you can attend to complete any outstanding modules.

These workshops will be delivered online and in English. If you are interested in taking the Competition-Introduction workshops in French, please contact the Quebec Biathlon Federation.

To register for a course, you must:

  • be available for all four sessions of the course;
  • be 16 years of age or older;
  • be a registered participant with Biathlon Canada for 2023-2024; and
  • have an NCCP number.

Please review the attached Competition-Introduction Coach pathway and complete as much of the recommended prior training as possible before the start of the workshop.

The learning facilitator will contact the registered participants in the week prior to the first session of the course with the Zoom login details and the course materials.

We are also looking forward to welcoming all Canadian biathletes to Alberta during the 2024 National Championships in Hinton and are excited to have the Alberta Winter Games in Grande Prairie coming back after a pandemic-related break!
