Biathlon Alberta Training Centre Head Coach Matthias Ahrens Announces His Intention to Retire

By February 7, 2023No Comments

Biathlon Alberta Training Centre (BATC) Head Coach Matthias Ahrens has informed Biathlon Alberta that he will not extend his current contract past March 31, 2023. Ahrens, who has coached the BATC for the past four seasons, after leaving Biathlon Canada as their Head Coach said about his departure, The past four years have been a blast coaching an energetic, motivated and fun team of young athletes in their pursuit to reach the highest level in our sport. This team has shown great energy and support to each other and I would like to thank you all for your cooperation and making it easy and fun while bringing the BATC program up to the next level. The season is not over yet as we are going into our competitive highlights and we will still have some fun together until the end of March.”

Biathlon Alberta’s General Manager, Elmar Heger, while disappointed to see Ahrens leave, said “Matthias leaves the BATC program in a very strong position. We worked very well together and were able to grow the program significantly. We created a post-secondary stream for athletes that allowed them to pursue excellence in education and sport, and have consistently had a large number of athletes qualify for international tours with Biathlon Canada. Change like this will bring some challenges but also opportunities and I am confident that we will identify a great new coach before next season but for now I would like to thank Matthias for 4 great years with him”.
