A group of Richard Boruta’s former athletes have come together to create an annual award valued at $2,450 that will benefit a developing Biathlon Alberta athlete and pay tribute to the late coach’s memory ($1225 female / $1225 male).

Boruta’s sudden passing in August 2017 shocked the biathlon community. He was a family man, respected world-class coach and builder of biathlon throughout Canada. His worth-ethic and incredible passion for life was infectious to all those with who he came into contact. The “Jupi Award,” which is roughly translated as “awesome” in Czech, is intended to recognize a young athlete who personifies these same traits in their pursuit of excellence in biathlon.

Application Details and Criteria:

  • Biathlon Alberta members, ages 14 to 19 years-of-age as of January 1st, 2022
  • Submit a maximum of 500 words on your future plans in Biathlon (in word or pdf document)
  • Send applications to Elmar Heger, at elmar@biathlon.ca and include “Jupi Award” in the subject line
  • Deadline to submit applications is Thursday, September 30th, 2021.
