It is with great sadness that Biathlon Alberta must share the news of the loss of our High Performance Coach, Richard Boruta on Wednesday, August 9th 2017.

Richard was a much-loved and very successful coach, most recently exemplified by being named Coach of the Year by Alberta Sport Connection and Biathlon Canada.

After graduating from a 5-year Masters Degree and a 2-year professional coaching program in Prague, Richard coached the Austrian Junior National team and B-team Seniors from 1994 until he came to Canada in 1998. Richard began coaching the Rocky Mountain Racers in Canmore, and became the Canadian National Team coach in 2002. He coached these athletes through the 2006 Olympics, after which he moved back into to the developmental level of coaching. In 2011 Richard became the Head Coach of the new Biathlon Alberta Training Centre. His passion for developing the potential of young athletes was instrumental in making the program a success, producing National Team athletes and a Junior World Champion. His dedication has allowed many athletes from Alberta and across Canada to reach their potential and give their best performances on the world stage. Even after their racing careers were done, Richard continued to give his athletes unstinting support, encouraging them in their ventures be they academic or new positions in the biathlon world.

We will all miss his quiet words and brilliant smile, so much. Our heart felt condolences go out to his wife, Kamila and his sons Michal, Thomas & Lukas.

Messages of condolence to the family may be sent to info@biathlon.ca and we will forward them to Kamila.

Richard’s Funeral Service is on Friday August 18th, 2017 and will be held at the Nordic Centre in a tent next to the Day Lodge. It will start at 5PM.

Kamila mentioned to wear bright coloured clothes as Richard always loved seeing her in colourful clothes and he will be happy that we are celebrating his life! No black or dark colours if possible.

As per Kamila’s request, donations may be made to the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre in the following ways:

For donations of $250 or more (and a tax receipt): albertasport.ca/uploads/DFP-Package-Final-2017.pdf Specify Biathlon as the sport and check off athlete development.

For donations below $250, please send a cheque to Biathlon Alberta at
